AIB Veterans Cross Boundaries
This year’s AIB Veterans Tennis Tournament had a multi-national flavor with almost 200 players from Germany, Hungry, and Korea as well as from the four provinces of Ireland taking part. Entry was again over subscribed in all sixteen sections which meant tough competition for our local players. However Kilkenny players didn’t leave the Noreside down with outstanding performances from Tommy Rochford. Robert Cummins, Mary Nolan and Christina Heffernan. Two former Kilkenny players, Harry and Catherine McCarthy, returned to give a Halloween scare to all their seeded opposition when they shaded past them to take the 55 section in the mixed doubles. Top performer of the tournament was local player, Tommy Rochford. After a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over Stan Dvorsly in 35 section in the men’s singles he went on to team up with Willie Reyolds to take the men’s doubles in the same section defeating another Kilkenny pair Robert Cummins and William Guiry . Mary Nolan eased her way to the final but was unlucky to loose the final in a tie-breaker against Anne Coveney. Another Kilkenny lady that didn’t leave the side down was Christian Heffernan. Christina partnered Ilona Nagel and were piped in the final by Un Ryle and Ann Naughton.
